Kings and Priests 2: The Righteousness of God in Christ Jesus

Rev Julian Kyula

What if the righteousness God has given you isn't just a future promise, but a present reality meant to transform your daily life, your thoughts, and your actions right now?

Main Theme

The central message focuses on understanding God-given righteousness as a present reality available now through Christ, not something to be accessed only after death. Righteousness involves conforming to God's will in purpose, thought, and action, and it must be actively practiced through love and good works. This divine righteousness has the power to exalt individuals and nations when lived out authentically.

Key Points

  • Righteousness is Available Now: Christ's redemptive work is a present reality. Peace, victory, healing, and restoration are available now, not just in the future, because of what was accomplished on the cross. (1 Corinthians 1:30)
  • Practicing Righteousness: Righteousness involves conforming to God's will in three key areas: purpose (discovering God's plan for your life), thought (aligning your thinking with Christ's), and action (living out your faith). (1 John 3:10)
  • Righteousness Exalts Nations: When believers live righteously, they become agents of blessing and justice, impacting their communities. Righteous actions like helping the poor, defending the oppressed, and showing love create societal change. (Job 29:14-17, Matthew 25:34-40)
  • Gift and Responsibility: Righteousness is a gift received through Christ, but it requires active engagement. God provides a Helper (the Holy Spirit) to guide believers in living out this righteousness. (Ephesians 2:10)
  • From Self-Centered to Kingdom-Focused: True righteousness shifts the focus from personal gain and self-preservation to serving God's purposes and blessing others, reflecting God's character. (Jeremiah 15:1, Ezekiel 14:14)

Biblical Foundation

The sermon draws heavily on 1 Corinthians 1:30, establishing that Christ became our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. It references 1 John 3:10 to highlight that practicing righteousness involves conforming to God's will in purpose, thought, and action. Ephesians 2:10 and 5:27 emphasize believers as God's workmanship, created for good works and His pleasure. Old Testament examples like Job 29 illustrate practical righteousness through helping the poor and oppressed. Matthew 25:34-40 connects acts of kindness directly to righteousness, and Jude 24 reinforces God's power to keep believers blameless.

Practical Application

  1. Discover Your Purpose: Actively seek God's specific plan for your life through prayer, the Holy Spirit's guidance, and studying His Word, recognizing that your primary calling transcends a mere career.
  2. Renew Your Mind: Consciously align your thoughts with God's perspective, rejecting negative or worldly thinking patterns, and embracing the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5).
  3. Act in Love: Practice righteousness through tangible actions, such as helping the poor, defending the oppressed, showing kindness, and using your resources and influence to bless others, just as Job exemplified.

Powerful Quote

"We are not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God to salvation... therein is the righteousness of God."

Call to Action

Commit today to moving beyond seeing righteousness as merely a positional status. Actively pursue God's will for your life, align your thoughts with His Word, and allow your faith to express itself through love and good deeds. Open the gift of righteousness God has given you and let it flow out to others. Say 'Yes' to God's call to be a vessel of His righteousness in the world.

Discussion Questions

  1. How does understanding righteousness as a present reality (available now) rather than just a future hope change your perspective on daily Christian living?
  2. In which area—purpose, thought, or action—do you feel you most need to grow in conforming to God's will? How can you practically pursue growth in that area?
  3. What specific steps can you take this week to ensure your righteousness is not just personal but actively benefits others in your community?
  4. How does the example of Job (eyes to the blind, help to the poor) challenge you to live out your faith practically?
  5. Reflecting on Matthew 25:34-40, how can you see acts of service to others as acts of service to Christ?
